Organic production is one of the ways we can move towards a healthier food system. The idea behind organic farming is that we can produce food by respecting nature and the limits of what is sustainable. One of the targets of the EU’s Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy is that by 2030 25% of the EU’s agricultural land has been certified as organic.
As most know, Malta has the lowest share of organically certified agricultural land. Yes, there are problems such as pests and land fragmentation, but the message from the success stories of our certified producers is that these problems can be transformed into opportunities with benefits for consumers.
The aim of this public consultation is for us to agree on a common vision that will help us increase organic production in Malta, and to discuss what are the tools that we need to support the transition and make this project a success.
