The cultivation of fish via aquaculture is a significant contributor to the Maltese economy, as demonstrated by a market production value of €178.7 million in 2020. Despite this success, financial loss and environmental impacts resulting from feed waste remains a challenge to the continued sustainable growth of the sector. As the aquaculture industry shifts towards a precision farming approach, the use of cutting-edge AI and computer vision technologies are gaining traction as a potential solution. With this objective in mind, implementation of these technologies in recirculating aquaculture systems and in the Maltese context will be discussed.
